The Met drops its Galliano retrospective
2 September 2026 — “John Galliano: Horizons”, scheduled to run at the Costume Institute next year, will not go ahead. Met director Max Hollein said the decision was reached jointly with the designer following discussions. Galliano said he did not want debate over his past to place the museum in a difficult position, adding that atonement is a continuing responsibility rather than something achieved through institutional recognition. The show had drawn immediate criticism over Galliano’s antisemitic and racist outburst in 2011, which cost him his role at Dior. He would have been only the third living designer given a solo show at the Costume Institute, after Yves Saint Laurent and Rei Kawakubo. The Met says details of a replacement spring exhibition and the 2027 Met Gala will follow.

“Spider-Man” rules the world, while “The Odyssey” — Korea
24 August 2026 — The film “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has topped the global box office for the fourth consecutive week. Over the weekend of August 21–23, the movie grossed approximately $109 million, bringing its total haul to $2.22 billion and making it the sixth highest-grossing film in history at the global box office. Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” is approaching the $1.5 billion mark. Interestingly, the situation in South Korea is the reverse. During that same weekend, Nolan’s film grossed $10.6 million, compared to $2.9 million for “Spider-Man”. This is partly due to a personal visit by the film director and cast to the country, where Nolan’s films have drawn 36 million admissions. Another factor is the format — a spectacle designed for the big screen. The film was shot using IMAX film cameras, meaning that in its true form, it can only be seen in a limited number of theaters.
