New York opens fashion month
17 September 2026 — New York Fashion Week ended on 15 September, closing the first stop of the spring/summer 2027 season before fashion month moves on to Milan and Paris. New York’s strongest moments: Henry Zankov made his debut as creative director of Diane von Furstenberg on the High Line, reimagining the label’s famous 1974 wrap dress in purple and mustard leopard jersey. Calvin Klein’s Veronica Leoni showed pared-back American minimalism alongside sculptures by Walter De Maria, while Michael Kors staged his collection in MoMA’s sculpture garden, drawing on mid-century modernism and abstract expressionism. Tommy Hilfiger returned to the Plaza, his former home, and Monse came back to the official calendar. A new generation of labels, among them LII, Diotima and Ashlyn, gave the week its energy.
Venice crowns women
14 September 2026 — The 83rd Venice International Film Festival The 83rd Venice International Film Festival closed tonight on the Lido with the Golden Lion going to May el-Toukhy’s “Woman Unknown”, the only film in competition directed solely by a woman. Its lead Mathilde Arcel also took the Volpi Cup for Best Actress, a double win the jury may only award unanimously. John Malkovich won Best Actor for Martin McDonagh’s “Wild Horse Nine”, and Lee Chang-dong received the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize for “Possible Love”. Stéphane Brizé’s “A Good Little Soldier” won Best Screenplay.
Asked whether the Golden Lion was a political statement, jury president Maggie Gyllenhaal joked that she hadn’t even needed to see the film.

The Met drops its Galliano retrospective
5 September 2026 — “John Galliano: Horizons”, scheduled to run at the Costume Institute next year, will not go ahead. Met director Max Hollein said the decision was reached jointly with the designer following discussions. Galliano said he did not want debate over his past to place the museum in a difficult position, adding that atonement is a continuing responsibility rather than something achieved through institutional recognition.The show had drawn immediate criticism over Galliano’s antisemitic and racist outburst in 2011, which cost him his role at Dior. He would have been only the third living designer given a solo show at the Costume Institute, after Yves Saint Laurent and Rei Kawakubo. The Met says details of a replacement spring exhibition and the 2027 Met Gala will follow.
“Emily in Paris” sets its farewell for Christmas Eve
2 September 2026 — Netflix will premiere the sixth and final season of “Emily in Paris” on Thursday, December 24. The season takes Emily beyond Paris to Greece, where she reconnects with Gabriel following his invitation at the close of season five. Creator Darren Star said he wanted the last run to be the show’s biggest, shot across multiple locations. Lily Collins, Ashley Park, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu and Lucas Bravo all return.
